A lot of people dread the holidays simply because of the boring holiday parties they feel obligated to attend. Whether it's your friends' holiday bash or your family's holiday gathering, you'll want this holiday season to be one you look forward to. Add some fun into your typical holiday parties with these Christmas drinking games that will leave those who attend look forward to the following year.

The Grinch Charades

Hand out slips of paper to everyone at the party and have them write down one of the descriptive phrases from “You're a mean one Mr. Grinch” song. Place everyone’s paper into a bowl and take turns choosing a slip to act out for the other guests. You can't use words and if no one can guess the phrase in under a minute, you have to take a shot.

Marshmallow Tower

Grab a bottle of marshmallow flavored vodka and a few bags of marshmallows for this game. On a flat surface, take turns stacking marshmallows on top of one another. The person who topples over the marshmallow tower will need to take a shot of the marshmallow vodka.

Gift Wrap Relay

Divide up into equal numbered teams and designate one person not on a team to be the judge. Each team should be given some wrapping paper, scissors, and tape. Each person on the teams will get a gift to wrap. The teams start off with one person wrapping their gift and having to get the approval of the judge in order for the next person to start wrapping their gift. The team that finishes first wins; all the other teams will need to take a shot.

Dancing around the Christmas Tree

You don't need to dance around you actual tree, a bottle or small object placed on the floor will work just as effectively. Assign one person to be the judge and one person to control the music. When the music is turned on, everyone will dance around the “tree” as outrageously as possible; when the music stops, everyone must freeze. If you move and the judge sees you, then you'll need to take a shot. This is one of the Christmas drinking games that will have everyone laughing and dancing around.

Christmas Bowed

For this game, you'll need a bag of holiday bows to divide up evenly to the party guests. Give each person an hour to try and slyly place their bows on each other's backs. If you get caught placing your bow on someone else back by that person, then you have to take a shot. After an hour, each person will need to take a shot for each bow they have been tagged with.

Holiday Pictionary

Pictionary is always a great game to play at any get together, but you can make it more festive and more fun. Have everyone write holiday related things to draw out. Combine all the suggestion into a pile and take turns trying to get the others to guess what you are drawing. If your time runs out without someone guessing correctly, you'll need to have a shot.

Holiday Song Shot Game

Have everyone at the party sit in a circle with a shot glass of their preferred liquor. Have one person start by singing the first line of their favorite holiday song. The person next to them must sing the next line and so on. If someone doesn't know the next line or messes it up, they need to take their shot. Once someone has messed up, the next person start over by signing the first line of their favorite holiday song and the game keeps going.

Santa's Hat and a Movie

You can play this game with as many or as few people and it fairly simple. Just place a Santa Hat on one of the corners of the TV and play a movie. The movie doesn't have to be a holiday film. Every time someone in the movie “wears” the Santa Hat, you have to drink.

Holiday Alphabet Game

This is one of the simple Christmas drinking games that everyone will know how to play. Play this game just as you would do with the regular alphabet game, but using only holiday related words or phrases. Have one person start with the letter “A”, naming something that starts with the letter A but is also holiday related, the next person must repeat what was said for the letter “A” and add on with the letter “B”. If someone messes up the sequence or can't think of anything for their letter, they'll have to drink

Santa's Hat Cup Stack

You'll need a stack of red plastic cups and a bag of cotton balls to play this game. Start with a cup turned upside down on a table and place a cotton ball on top so it looks like a Santa Hat. Have each person take turns staking a cup and a cotton ball on top of each other. The person who eventually makes the stack of cups falls has to take a shot.

Movie Trivia

Have everyone write down their favorite Holiday movie and assign one person to be in charge. The person in charge will shout out the name of one of the suggested holiday movies and the first person to guess the main character of the film gets to choose two other people to take a shot.

Kris Kringle

Have everyone sit in a circle with a shot of the preferred liquor. Have one person start of saying Kris Kringle to the person next to them, that person must turn and say Kris Kringle to the person next to them by saying slightly faster. Each person takes their turn say Kris Kringle faster than the person before them, and the person to mess up will take their shot.

Family Drinking Game

This is one of the Christmas drinking games you can simply play by yourself at your next family holiday gather or with some of your favorite cousins. Take a drink if one of your family members is wearing a holiday hat or sweater. Drink when someone asks you about your job or relationship. Take a drink when someone gives you a backhanded compliment or just have a drink when someone annoys you.

12 Days of Christmas

Have one person start off singing the Twelve Days of Christmas, but instead of the actual lyrics, they will replace the line with something they really want to get for Christmas. They have to make it fit into the songs just as the original line. Then the next person will continue the second verse, replacing the actual lyrics with what they want for Christmas and completing the song with what the person before them added. When someone messes up, they have to take a shot.

Holiday Movie Drinking Games

Whatever holiday movie happens to be on, turn it into a fun drinking game. Choose objects, phrases, gestures or actions that occur regularly throughout the specific film and drink every time it happens.
